Victorian Period 1840-1890

The Victorian Period of architecture began in 1840 one year after Queen Victoria was crowned Queen of England and the English Colonies. Australia grew during this period to become a major colony for England supplying many raw products for the growing industrial power. Victorian architecture embodied the affluence of the British Empire. At the same time architecture, furniture and art had the pretence of morality.

Victorian architecture reflected back to the Renaissance stlyle and later Baroque mannerisms. Georgian symmetrical facades gave way to imposing Renaissance styles with columns, collonades, domes, pediments, and ornate masonry framed openings. The General Post Office building in Sydney by James Barnet in 1866 and Customs House by Charles McLay, architect in 1886, in Brisbane are examples of the Victorian Classical architecture.
